Boy donates bar mitzvah money to help 'Liberty' musical make it to Broadway

News Date:
April 6, 2011

At his bar mitzvah at the Park Slope Jewish Center last fall, Jesse Naranjo said to himself the words that are so integral to the coming-of-age ritual: "Today, I am a man."

By giving his bar mitzvah money to a musical about the Statue of Liberty, this immigrant's son proved he's also a mensch.

The Middle School 51 eighth-grader is donating $2,700 he got as gifts to help producers of "Liberty: The Musical" take it to a major Manhattan venue.

Co-founder and Artistic Director Dana Leslie Goldstein's award-winning play, NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM, completed its run at the WorkShop Theater Company on October 31, 2009. Byrne Harrison of Stagebuzz.com said the play, "..feels at once new and exciting, but there is also something comfortable about it. These are not characters you have seen before, but they are familiar nonetheless, and that familiarity makes it easy to slip on this play like a favorite shirt. With Goldstein's strong writing and the cast's remarkable work, it would be hard not to care for the Mendels and the story that spins out over the course of the play..."
