Theater Garden’s 2007-2008 CASA program will again be an in-school residency at The Mirabal Sisters Campus in Washington Heights, where professional Theater Garden teaching artists, performers and writers will work with the junior high school students to create a performance piece that is presented to their peers, as well as the surrounding community. Once again, students in The Children’s Aid Society’s OST program will have the opportunity to see professional Theater Garden productions as well, including The Road to Freedom: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., & the Civil Rights Movement.
Last year’s student project was an adaptation of the book “The Color of My Words/El Color de Mis Palabras” by Lynn Joseph. “The Color of My Words” is the story of a 12-year-old girl who is an aspiring writer growing up in the Dominican Republic. The student and community population of Washington Heights is of largely Dominican heritage, with many bilingual households. The adaptation and performance were bilingual and included student-generated material, in addition to the text. The focus of the program was on building the collaborative and concentration skills of the students in connection with developing their acting and performance skills.
As the program intensified in December and January, additional students were invited to get involved in the design and creation of costumes, sets and posters for the production of “The Color of My Words”. Technical theater students ran sound and lighting for the performances.
The final project was presented for students from all the schools at the Mirabal Sisters Campus, as well as the surrounding community. |
